From the Assessor’s Office:

The Assessor’s Office has begun using a new online host for our Mapping and Assessment information.  Our Geographic Information System (GIS) Viewer is a powerful tool designed to enhance public access to property data in North Canaan.  This interactive platform allows users to search, view, and analyze real-time property information seamlessly.  You will also be able to get an actual copy of the field card! Just look towards the bottom of the first field card for the “View Field Card” icon and it will take you to the actual card.  This is all accessed by going to the Assessor’s page of the Town’s website.

Also, it’s that time of year again when the Assessor’s office will be doing field work so if you have taken out a Building Permit you will probably notice us out and about.  If you would like to make an appointment for an inspection please don’t hesitate to call the office or email us at assessor@northcanaan.org.

Regarding Motor Vehicle Assessments -  please remember in order to make an adjustment to a Motor Vehicle Tax Bill we need a copy of a cancelled plate receipt and a second form of proof such as a Bill of Sale, receipt from a junk yard, information from an insurance company or a copy of an Out of State Registration.  Feel free to email the documentation to the Assessor’s Office.

That brings me to another topic.  Please note that even if a vehicle, trailer, etc. is registered in another state, if it remains in North Canaan and most frequently leaves from and returns to North Canaan every day you must still be taxed in North Canaan and any unregistered motor vehicle is subject to property tax as well.  Please see the following statute:

Sec. 12-71

(B) For assessment years commencing on or after October 1, 2023, any unregistered motor vehicle or motor vehicle that is not used or capable of being used that is located in a municipality in this state, shall be listed and valued in the manner described in subparagraph (A) of this subdivision.

4) Any motor vehicle owned by a nonresident of this state shall be set in the list of the town where such vehicle in the normal course of operation most frequently leaves from and returns to or in which it remains. If such vehicle in the normal course of operation most frequently leaves from and returns to or remains in more than one town, it shall be set in the list of the town in which such vehicle is located for the three or more months preceding the assessment day in any year, except that, if such vehicle is located in more than one town for three or more months preceding the assessment day in any year, it shall be set in the list of the town where it is located for the three months or more in such year nearest to such assessment day. In the event a motor vehicle owned by a nonresident is not located in any town for three or more of the months preceding the assessment day in any year, such vehicle shall be set in the list of the town where such vehicle is located on such assessment day.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Assessor’s Office at 860-824-7313 ext. 108 or email assessor@northcanaan.org and I will be happy to go over this information with you.
