Welcome to North Canaan, Connecticut

North Canaan is located at the junctions of Route 44 and Route 7 in the northwest corner of Connecticut. The town was incorporated in 1858 when it separated from the Town of Canaan (Falls Village). The town is governed by a Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance and traditional New England style Town Meeting.

The Canaan Railroad Station is where the east-west tracks connecting Hartford, Connecticut and Poughkeepsie, NY (and beyond to Campbell Hall, NY where connections were made to the west with other railroads) cross the north-south tracks connecting Danbury, Connecticut and Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The station, completed in 1872 is the oldest railroad station in continuous service in the United States.

Subject: Lime Kiln Road Closure
The Town of North Canaan would like to request a temporary road closing of a section of Lime Kiln Road. The section of road would be from the intersection of Daisy Hill Road southerly to the intersection of Housatonic Railroad Crossing. The purpose is to allow the trains to pass the crossing without blowing the horn on the crossing on the weekends. Also the section of road way from said crossing southerly to Route 44 will be open to local traffic only. The time frame for this request is starting November 4th and every weekend in November. The hours closed are 6:00 a.m. Saturday until 12:00 p.m. Sunday. Specialty Minerals would be in charge of barriers, signage {ie) pre-warning, per D.O.T., and dates. Notification of emergency personnel and citizens will be handled by the town. (Contact: Steve Curley - stephen.curley@ct.gov, 860-594-2746)

The Town of North Canaan will be completing a Revaluation of all properties for the 2017 Grand List. Representatives from Appraisal Resource Group, Inc. are in the process of following up on building permits and verifying recent sales. Once all information is gathered and values are in place, notices of new assessments will be sent. Property owners with concerns will then have the opportunity to request an informal hearing with the Revaluation Company. If you have any questions, please contact the Assessor’s office.
